When Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz enter the octagon on January 31, 2015, it will be the most unlikely superfight anyone could have ever imagined. Cheap Cardinals Jerseys . At the peak of the superfight matchmaking era, the former middleweight champion Silva was mentioned among former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones as possible opponents. Diaz wasnt ever mentioned. Fast forward to todays UFC, where Diaz has become one of the sports biggest draws and the once-invincible Silva is coming off off two straight losses and a career-threatening injury. For the former Strikeforce welterweight champion Diaz, who has lost two straight UFC welterweight title fights and subsequently retired after each loss, there is everything to gain from this fight - including another shot at gold. But for Silva, this fight - No. 3 of the 10-fight contract he signed in 2012 - gives Silva the opportunity to re-cement his legacy. Silvas fighting future was thrown into question when his shin snapped around the leg of middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December. "The pain was absurd. I only thought one thing: Is it over? Will I ever walk again? Am I alright?," Silva said in an appearance on Brazilian television station Rede Globo. In the octagon, it was his second consecutive loss to Weidman after a record run of 16 straight wins and 10 title defenses dating back to the start of his UFC tenure in 2006. Outside the octagon, the then 38-year-old was facing a lengthy layoff and a daunting recovery. "This will be a tough thing to overcome and come back from at his age," UFC president Dana White told reporters at the post-fight press conference on Dec. 28. "He literally left here (MGM Grand Garden Arena) and is going straight into surgery." But after less than six months of recovery, Silva (33-6) was officially cleared to begin sparring again in June. A month after that, Silva was booked in the main event for the UFCs flagship event on Super Bowl weekend. There is no doubt that "The Spider" is arguably the greatest fighter of all time, but Silva has become complacent at different points throughout his career, chipping away at his greatness. There have been times Silva has been too playful in the octagon with his opponents, drawing criticism from fans, other fighters and White - see his UFC 112 bout with Demian Maia. His nonchalant behaviour, and perceived lack of respect for his opponent, cost him in his first bout with Weidman. Coming off a dominating, and overly playful, knockout of UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar, Silva did more dancing and feigning injury than he did fighting against the relatively untested Weidman. As the history books show, Weidman made Silva pay, dearly. In Diaz (26-9, 1 NC), there will be no fooling around. If there is anything "The Stockton Bad Boy" is known for, its his scowl not his smile. After his last loss in 2013, Diaz said the only two matchups that could bring him back to the octagon were a rematch with St-Pierre and a date with Silva. Diaz got his wish just days after signing a three-fight contract on July 25. If that wasnt motivation enough for Silva, then Diazs plans to use him as a stepping stone definitely should be. "Id like to fight for the title," Diaz told UFC.com before the superfight was announced. "I think that would be a big deal and worth fighting for. I want fights that will lead to a title fight. Whoever is in line and whoever has the title, thats who Im going to be fighting." With a win over Silva, White told Bloody Elbow on Wednesday Diaz would earn consideration for a shot at the belt. "Nick Diaz is a very popular fighter as it is. If he comes in and beats Anderson Silva, absolutely, he could fight for a title. He is right in there. It would be a huge, huge win for him," White said. Diaz may have more to gain from the superfight, but it is Silva who has much more to lose. Having a target on your back for the better part of a decade is taxing enough, the question is will Silva return to being a predator or is it the 39-year-olds time to be the prey? "He is 100 percent healthy," White said. "He is kicking again, feels great, and is chomping at the bit to get back in the octagon." Stitched Cardinals Jerseys . The 2014 edition will be the ninth meeting between the Caps and Vikes in a tradition that dates back to 2005. "Since the original Whitecaps, the club has enjoyed fantastic support from fans in Victoria and all across Vancouver Island," said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. Gussie Busch Jersey . Playing in front of a crowd of 5,788 at Shaw Park, the Fish beat the St. Paul Saints 7-2 to win the final game of a five-game series and pull 4 1/2 games ahead of the Saints in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. Casey Haerther was the hitting hero as the leading hitter in the league raised his average to .396 with three hits in five trips and also drove in a pair of runs as the Goldeyes improved to 37-22 on the season. Luis Alen had a hit in three trips, scored a run and drove in a run; Reggie Abercrombie went three-for-four with two runs scored; and Donnie Webb had two hits, including a solo homer as the Goldeyes put an end to a three-game losing streak. However, while the bats came alive, the real hero might have been starter Ethan Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth battled for 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one run on eight scattered hits as the Saints had at least one base runner in every inning and had runners in scoring position in seven of the nine innings. "That was a big win for us because it gives us some momentum heading out onto the road," said Haerther, whose two-run double in the eighth put the game out of reach. "This is a team that wont go very long without scoring runs and we knew wed start getting good at bats again. This win was good for us, good for everybody in the clubhouse, because even though it was a tough homestand, we won the last game and we all feel good about ourselves going into Kansas City." It was a wild one in many ways for the Goldeyes. In the first inning, third baseman Jake Blackwood drilled a double and pulled up lame at second base. He had to be taken out of the game so it meant moving Josh Mazzola to third, Luis Alen to first and Jordan Guida to catcher. But tthen, in the next inning, newcomer Sam Kimmel pulled up lame in the outfield and the moves were on again. Jose Martinez Cardinals Jersey. With the Goldeyes down to nothing on the bench but pitchers, reliever Kaohi Downing moved to rightfield and Donnie Webb moved to leftfield. But when the game got tight, manager Rick Forney moved Guida to first base and Alen back behind the plate. For the ninth inning, Forney took Guida out of the game and put Haerther, the DH at first. Its more managing than anyone should have to do in one afternoon. "Ive often pitched to two different catchers in a game," said Hollingsworth. "But I think its the first time Ive pitched to one, then to another and then to the first guy again. But it was easy. Jordan and Luis both call great games so it was no problem for me at all." It took a while for the Goldeyes to get on the board, but when they did, they did it with gusto. In the fifth, trailing 1-0, Abercrombie led off with a double and eventually came home on a single by Alen. Guida, who was safe on an error, scored on a ground out by Haerther and the Fish had a 2-1 lead. Webb homered in the sixth to make it 3-1 and then the Goldeyes scored again when Brock Bond came home on an error by St. Paul shortstop Joey Becker. St. Paul cut the Goldeyes lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth, but ion the bottom of the inning, Alen drove in a run with a single and Haerther drove in two with a double and the Goldeyes had bounced back from losing a doubleheader on Wednesday night. Hollingsworth (4-0, 3.96 ERA) got the win while St. Paul starter Robert Coe (4-5, 6.36 ERA) took the loss. There was no save The Goldeyes left immediately after the game for Kansas City where they will play a three-game weekend series. Winnipeg will return home on Monday to open a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. ' ' '
